Some random thoughts by your friendly, neighborhood DM:
I was just mulling that over. Usually in a table top game, the players will say, we're going to such and such place. The DM then calculates how long it would take them, then either decides if there are any significant enounters or rolls on a random encounter table (which I've always hated). If nothing happens the DM says "it took you six days to go from there to here, nothing happend. What do you do now?"
In NWN, I'd have to plan EVERYTHING though before each session. The first few sessions will happen exclusively in and around Duath. I won't even attempt to make the rest of the world, much less the rest of the island at a first go. (Unless I can get a co-DM or two to run their own servers?) I have quite a number of ideas to keep players in the town for a while which will really help me to run a smooth game that is, if I can keep the PCs in a relatively small area at one time.
I think it would be difficult to run a large region on a single server as I am shooting for 3-6 areas completely fleshed out for each session and the top-side of Duath will consist of two maybe three large areas to begin with. So to answer your question about the size of the world, it will probably be more than a hundred differnt areas/zones, but for each session it will only consist of those areas useful for the story at hand. I can only set up and run so many areas and NPC's at a time. This will require a little ooc help from the players to keep them from wandering into territory which has no area for it yet. ("There be strange magics about Duath this night! I can not seem to pass through the gates at all!!!" hehe)
Now for the time issue: I think that I will plan on having a flexable time system. When we are playing though, time will pass the same as it does in real life, maybe just a little faster than real life, but not much. But at appropriate times (which I will have to use some judgment about), I will let everyone know that another day in game is coming to an end. A person can rest as often as they wish with in the rules which I think is instantanous, but I will "force" the passage of time when need be. Most sessions will last one "day" (the first session will probably begin in the evening and last until about midnight in game time which would be about one for one real time to game time).
One thing about traveling we could do, is say it takes three days to get from point A to point B, the player would then police him/herself on this point and play another character during those sessions.
