For myself (and we'll see if anyone else agrees), I've never much cared for much godly intervention in my campaigns. I prefer religious matters to be veiled in mystery and metaphysical speculation. The characters in the game, as do real life people, will have to look for the patterns and find meaning in them as they can.
That said, the culture of Faalor definitely has some strong influence on this. Whether Adrahil or Maelwar ACTUALLY exist is indeterminate by modern, real life scientific standards. People may point to the fact that certain people can use magic and perform miracles but there is no solid proof of the existence of these gods, and there are those in Faalor who believe that these are only signs of the natural order of things not the gods interference in daily life. The Church is all-invasive in these lands though, so thinking that there IS no Adrahil is tandem to people today thinking the earth is the center of the solar system. Every character on Faalor has grown up being taught that the gods DO exist. Only the most radical, brave or plain stupid would publicly announce his or her disbelief.
My plan at this point is to not have divine interference be much of a factor in the campaign (i.e. I won't have Maelwar's avatar sitting up in the Crags waiting to be assaulted by you guys). The gods WILL play a major role though in daily life. Think of Faalor as a pseudo-medieval England. Jehovah, nor His angels, nor Satan were actually SEEN operating, but people certainly believed it. When something bad happened, they attributed it to either a moral failure, the removal of God's protection, or the workings of the Devil. These sorts of issues were always there in the back of their minds. So it will be with Faalor.
"Bad things" may happen for a variety of reasons on Faalor. People will most likely have all sorts of explanations. I won't guarantee that the gods will NEVER be involved, but at this point it can be safely said that, while your character will most likely be trained to look for the supernatural explanation, you the player shouldn't expect it.
On a side note, I'm going to be mean enough without having to resort to inflicting divine judgments. I have far more subtle yet work-a-day sorts of plagues in mind. Unless, of course, you REALLY want them. mahaha
Anyone have any other strong preferences?
