FAQ about Faalor campaign 1

“That liche in the caverns was kind of confusing too, i'm not sure why it was there and why it just killed Radek and didn't slaughter all of us (besdies out of DM mercy, hehe).”

That was one of many terrible miscalculations on the part of your DM. I was sure I took off most of the magical protections of the liche so it would be a fair fight. It really wasn’t due to my miscalculation so I just had the liche run away. What it was doing down there, it was brought to Bridalveil by the Mists.

“WTF the succubus was doing in Bridalveil . . . ?”

She knew she was trapped, but also understood that she needed to have some kind of high emotion or evil pawn to become the new Lord of Bridalveil. So she was working on the Mayor, slowly poisoning his mind.

“How come the campaign didn't end with a final showdown with the evil goddess person?”

Because you guys goofed. Hehe Philosophicaly, I just let the chips fall where they may. Now, if I were writing a novel, I’d probably make sure it ended with a climatic battle with the forces of darkness but that’s just not the way life goes. Sometimes evil wins, sometimes good wins. I do, though, always give the PC party at least a 51% chance of coming out on top in some kind of novelistic ending or outcome.

“Who was the succubus and why was she down there?”

The Succubus was a demon who came to Faalor with the orcs thousands of years ago. In a battle with the gnomes, the orcs and the demoness were defeated and the gnome priest found a way of locking her away deep underground. There she’d been waiting for a time when she can be released.

“Why did she lure us to open the door?”

She wanted the door to be opened so, obviously enough, she can be released once again to do her dirty work on the surface.

“Why was Thalan affected? Was there a specific reason?”

Thalan’s character was a bit whacky to begin with, so it seemed natural enough that he was the one effected the most. He was an evil elf and probably there was some spiritual connection with the demoness. In fact, had you not killed him, he would have become the Ravenloft Lord of Bridalveil.

“Splurgs? wtf were they doing down there?”

Splurgorths were an ancient race, that I wanted to be a bit of a surprise for you guys. They lived deep underground and all but the gnomes and dwarves probably had a clue that they ever existed. They hadn’t been seen for thousands of years but had been harboring a deep resentment for the surface races, believing that they were the ones who forced them underground, when it was really a choice by their leaders way back when.

“Who/what caused the earthquake?”

The earthquake was a natural event. Something that happens from time to time on a volcanic island like Faalor.

“What was the Mist?”

The Mists are the central part of the Ravenloft campaign setting developed by TSR during the early 80’s. As I understand it, the Mists are a semi-sentient “being” connected with the Ethereal Plane of existence. Whether they are actually evil, is hard to say. One could say they’re evil because they are attracted to great evilness and they attempt to transport people and places with great negative emotional energy to a realm of existence, generally called Ravenloft, after the first land to appear there. One could also make the argument that they are good, in so much as they have a propensity to create Domains, prison lands that reflect the character of the one evil lord in each, to eternally imprisons “bad” beings (usually mad scientists, insane priests, vampires, werewolves, demons and ghosts) in. The Mists were attracted by the release of the demoness and began to transport Bridalveil into the Core lands of Ravenloft.

“How could we have avoided the Mist?”

Yes, but I didn’t think it was likely because opening the door to the demon’s prison pretty much set things in motion. Basically, it was my lame way of making sure you guys stayed in one general area; I was envisioning too much “I wanna go to Duath!” And because it was my first real try at a serious campaign, I wanted to make a plausible excuse why you could run off to Duath.

What was the intended direction we should've taken?”

Well, I had things set up so that you would find some clues in the library that would tell you how to imprison the demoness in the Caves of Adrahil. Once the demoness was imprisoned again, the Mists would clear and never bother Faalor again. That’s the direction I thought you were going to take.

“Why did killing the Mayor cause the Mists to take over the town?”

Bridalveil was slowly moving toward becoming a Ravenloft Domain but before the Mists took over, it was still safely floating in the Ethereal plane. When the guard and mayor was killed, the demoness and the ensuing emotions that followed tipped the scales in Bridalveil toward the Mists and they responded. The Mists basically were waiting for a period of intense negative emotion to work, directed toward “innocents” that is.

Why did you have the campaign end so lamely?!?!?

Because your DM didn’t take the opportunity to end it more appropriately. I wanted to put a definite end to the campaign, as doing another escape from Ravenloft campaign didn’t much appeal to me and it would have totally frustrated you, let me assure you.

“Why do you hate us? :(“

Because ALL DM’s hate PCs. It’s just part of the job description.

“Are you going to tell us what the "good" ending was?”

I suppose I could have. The “good” ending would have been where you guys worked together as a team to think through the problem at hand, gather the magical ingredients, seek the Gypsy’s help, and summon the demon into the caves.

“When does the next campaign start?”

Next week.
