Well said, John! I agree with pretty much everything you said. I didn't know about the AT40 chart changes until 1993 myself since we didn't have a local station that carried it between Dec. 1990 and March 1993.

I think that was the beginning of the downward slide of radio overall, as program directors and their increasingly corporate bosses made playlists tighter and more restricted, thus fragmenting radio formats and causing all airplay charts to slow down tremendously. The variety went out the window, and a whole generation is growing up thinking there's something weird about following a rap record with a ballad.
