One other reason why the same songs may have always been the victim is because once it is edited, they don't have to do it again. I'm sure this saved some time in the production of the show.
I remember when "One Week" by Barenaked Ladies went to #1 back in the fall of 1998, they added a verse. I remember hearing it and thinking "I thought they just played that verse".
