A Tribute To Smokey

When you were just a little kitten
So Timid yet playful and carefree
We picked you up, brought you home
to met your new brother to be

We watched you grow as years went by
your grey coat deciding your name
You weren't the most effectionate cat
but we loved you all the same

One day when you were still quite young
You never showed up for days
We called around to all the vets
and called the shelter of the strays

When we couldn't find you anywhere
We could only hope for the best
A day later, our local vet called to say
You had been hit by a car and needed to rest

We went and picked you up
So timid, helpless you lay there
your wounds healed but the images didn't
and you jumped at the tiniest scare

In the following years you lost your brother
You changed where you lived as well
still you came and went at leasure
but then a period of uncertainity fell

Your living arrangements changed often
until finally you were settled once more
and began to fall into your old rythm
of coming and going through your own cat door

Many years passed by, you softened finally
became affectionate in your growing age
occassionally sleeping on a lap
We wondered if it was just a stage

Three weeks ago, something wasn't right
you suddenly aged years in days
your tummy got bloated, your skin saged
you deteriated in many different ways

You visited the doctor with no outcome
deep down we knew your days were few
yesterday, your movement slow, meow weak
another visit to the vet was all we could do

The news wasn't what we wanted to hear
an x-ray would help determine the cause
I got a call at work at about 11am
The vet described what he had found

I asked if he thought you were in pain
he believed you were and i spoke to mum
she had to make the choice of what to do
and sadly, your day had finally come

I can't describe the feeling of your last hug
We just stroked you until the time came
kissed you as you lay there so helpless
no longer the little kitten once so untame

You quickly fell asleep, spirit was set free
your empty body was all that remained
and we said our very last goodbyes.
We walked out, our faces tear stained

You fly free my smokey bear
know always you'll be in our hearts
