Subject: Gown-up shoes

The night was so open, spread across like the endless cornfields I remember from my childhood-
My grown-up shoes clinked across the parking lot
to the safety of my car-
I stared at the brownie in my left hand
and back at the hotel.
The breeze danced with my long black dress
and I was surprised to see a woman's body under the light
of the streetlamp- but there it was.
I smiled and shook it off
getting behind the wheel and rolling down the window.
I stuffed the brownie in my mouth
and started the car-
"There's something about you-
tears me inside out whenever you're around
there's something about you . . ."
I was singing loud.
I turned out of the parking lot
and drove the backroads home.
The wind whipped through
darker short hair
and I passed places I once called "mine"
but life had happened.
As it had today.
The smell of wedding day candles
dizzied me
and filled me with a sweet sadness.
"Credit card please,
sould please-"
I heard my laugher
heard the music
heard the night
and that damned clock ticking us
into adulthood-
Tears and laughter-
and a night that had a new smell,
a new air.
I pulled my car into a driveway
that in weeks
would no longer be mine.
The engine shut off
and I pulled bags out of the backseat.
I watched the sky disappear as the garage shut
and turned and went inside.
