Subject: Velveteen

The velveteen wastes of a carefully tailored life
Littered the floor she was sweeping
She pulled up a fiery red slip, perhaps the remnants of a hem,
And tied it around her neck.
She was pretty for a housemaid.

Tiny feathers swam about the air,
That had been shed from a peacock feathered hat
And uneaten cakes remained from tea.
And the girl took a look at her hand-me-down world,
And smiled that she was alive.

Her lady walked about the downtown
In a perpetual fit of frustration and disgust,
Cruelly regarding the dirty children and sooty streets.
She walked swiftly, her posture angrily proper,
To a destination she did not particularly care for
Which she would then leave for an equally distasteful terminus.
She was not alive, but it was okay
Because she never even realized it.
