Subject: The Desert

The Desert

I stand on the second
level of the ferry taking us from Playa
de Carmen to Cozumel and I watch
the surf explode from the front,
like so many bottles
of champagne being opened.

There was a time when such
a rejoice would've made
my cheeks harden.

Yes, but the man in the airport
had described a desert in Chile
where nothing could live.
No vultures.
No cactus.
No ants.
"When you die in that place,"
he'd said, "nothing is going
to eat you."

Oh, I can remember
just how sand crunches.
