Stand Off

The Star Wars pinball machine
In the back corner
Of the game room, lights flashed like a frantic streetlight
As it chirped the Imperial March at me.
I hammered on the mechanical thief, bellowed profanity.
My mom forced me out the doors into
The daylight, her face a red apple in the sun.

My Jaws shut tight like a snapping turtle clamped onto
A threatening finger - all the way to her office.
We walk up the stairs, my mom and me
And the back of my head feels prickly
The same as when I sleep over in
An unfamiliar place.
The woman introduces herself and her
Brushed cotton dress sways
Obeying the movement of her body.
We sit and she asks, “So how are things?” and then later “If you won’t talk…”
My eyes fix on my shoes, blurred through salt water,
Old hound dogs slumped on the carpet
And I say absolutely nothing
She is talking to my mom now, as the aged canines
go out of focus
“I am going to have to recommend a live-in program”
The room spins as her collected words strike.
I’m out of options here.
