Bible Thumper

The sound slaps me on
The February wind
A mechanical dirge
Deep and earthy.
It carries a steady beat
Like the drummer
In the back of a
Viking Ship.
As I draw nearer
To the source
I see him.
His burden slumps
On his shoulders
Hanging like a
Gondola from pieces
Of string.
It reads “The Kingdom
of Heaven is at
Hand” and I examine
This man, this monk
Aflame by his own hand.
“Repent sinners!”
His voice bursts into
A cloud of frozen breath.
His thick square glasses
Slightly warp his eyes,
And what eyes!
Two widows wearing
Grey, locked up in the
Tower of his face.
“The time is now!”
Another explosion of
White, a musket being
Discharged.
He hasn’t showered or
Shaved in a couple days.
His face is a coarse
Congregation adorning
Black, all standing at
Attention.
Some occasional
Passers by snicker,
But there is an
Eerie silence over


The courtyard as his
Voice continues to boom
Like cannons firing
From ancient warships.
The sounds of battle fade
As I continue down
My concrete
Path.
