the scars of a previous life
expose that which you hide
remembrances of untold strife
gravestones of friends that died

a history of blood and tears
each day you had to face
a past of surviving with fears
surroundings can't erase

the lives now placed within your hands
the lives you must protect
taken away from violent lands
mistakes you must correct

your children will not have to know
the price you had to pay
without fear, they can learn and grow
for that, thank God each day
