In the early 80's government fuel efficiency standards enacted in the 70's caused new cars to use half the fuel they used 10 years before, which helped americans cut oil consumption by 4 million barrels a day between 1979 and 1984. Unfortunately, the republican congress of the 90's and the bush regime have done nothing to help increase fuel efficiency, so we do not have the energy efficient infrastructure that was comming on line in the early 80's to combat the current energy crisis. Yes, market forces will eventually solve the problem, we will have an economic collapse and consume less energy, just like cancer cures smoking.
