He is very intellectual, and is a firm believer in capitalism. He always argues with me and others when we bash bush and the failed american economic system, and america's declining society. My canadian friend is proud of his computer programming career, he worked for 7 years at different clothing companies in new york for almost nothing, usually 20,000 - 30,000 a year, until finally a reletive of his got him a half-decent job in his company, even still he makes only 50,000 a year, which doesn't get you very far in the nyc metro area, where a cramped 2 bedroom appartment costs 250,000, with a big commute. His job is in a distant suburb, which requires over 50 miles of driving and a few tolls, he is living in a basement apartment, after working 10 years as a white collar professional he is definitely experiencing the "american dream".

I only bring this up because one night the story of his brother who still lives in canada came up. His brother is mentally ill, and in an institution, he is quite functional, but you can tell he is not 100%. I asked him why his brother did not also move to america (land of opportunism), and his reply was, simply, "the health care is much better up there", !!!!!! Yes, america has the best health care if you are healthy, but if you are not healthy or wealthy, america is not the place to be.

The free market capitalists make the claim that canadian doctors are moving to america because they can't make a living under the canadian system. I always took this for granted, until one day i came to think about it, both my sisters and my mother work or worked in hospitals (my mother retired). I heard many stories of doctors in these hospitals, many come from foriegn countries, but i never heard about any doctors moving here from canada. I think about the docs i see, and while many are immigrants, none are from canada. Most doctors in new york are from foreign countries, except for the older doctors, why are so few americans going into medicine? I thought the canadian system had problems and america had such a great health care system, why are americans not interested in this allegedly lucrative field? Why are most of the doctors here from countries like india, russia, china, latin america, arab countries, i don't see any west europeans, canadians, or japaneese, could it be they have a better health care system for both the patient and the doctor?

>If you think health insurance is free in countries
