While we argued, with my Dad, who was a Democrat, a Union Democrat, all of his life, he began to change his viewpoint. I am not so self-absorbed that I would ever attribute it to me.

He saw stuff happening in the Union that he was really upset about. The new guys were getting screwed. They didn't get the same benefits, or even the same pay scale. He told the "Union" that they were nothing if they didn't stand for every guy who worked there. He got slapped down.

He started listening to Rush Limbaugh (hey, you can hate him if you like, but if you want to make any points with me (I'm tougher than most) you really have to come up with some concrete rebuttals. My dad couldn't. He listens today. Has changed his party.

SOOOO, maybe Dad & Mom raised me to change DAD'S mind. (Mom has always been a Republican.)

Talk about screwed up????

Hell, I know who I am. With my background, I've more than been exposed to both sides. I think I tend more to the Libertarian side though - I think the government should just plain and simple, lay off. Leave us alone, let us do our thing. Dad actually has gone that way, when he told a representative from the area, that he would vote for her, if she promised not to pass any more laws.

You can call me screwed up if you want, but I've seen both sides. I am very comfortable making the decision about where I stand.

Mom & Dad did that for me. I tried to do that with my kids. We'll see how that turns out. It doesn't really matter to me, they have to go where they go. But they should do it with the knowledge of both sides. And they should understand the consequences of both.

I understand that my friends on this board might find other things more important. I understand that those are differences that might never be "worked out" the way I would work them out. They are just differences that can be discussed - to whatever end.

The discussion is the best part. Really, that is all WE have.
