Noble sentiments, to be sure. And there's no doubt in my mind that Israel has behaved just as Arafat has stated.

Israel continues to harangue Arafat and the world on the necessity to establish a period of peace before talks can begin, but it seems pretty clear that Sharon is not doing anything to establish conditions that would facilitate a period of peace. The way to get peace isn't to slap someone in the face over and over while saying "You must be peaceful if you want to establish peaceful relations with me."

The right of return Arafat speaks of, of course, will be a major stumbling block, and I see no easy resolution of the problem, but it's their problem, not mine. I think a large number of the people in the world do have an interest in the fate of Jerusalem, though. I agree that the reasonable solution is to make it an open city, and it seems to me the city should have a joint administration, rather than two separate governments.
