As I see it, calling a cop every time somebody smacks a kid inevitably results in the social services types getting involved, and as often as not (as we're seeing in Florida) their intervention is wrongheaded, useless or ineffective. Direct action on the spot by the witnesses would seem to be more effective and immediate. If a crowd of people had promptly descended on the mother in the instant case and given her hell, I'm sure it would have made the correct impression on her. If neighbors of abused children had the guts to confront abusers instead of passing the buck to some "authority figure", our society would be more like the one we grew up in.

But people don't want to get involved, so they pass stupid laws that give the responsibility to others, and don't stop to think that with responsibility, they're ceding authority.
