I read an op-ed piece, in a local paper (Waterbury Republican)that made a lot of sense. Our schools, evidently, spend anywhere from $6,700 to $11,000 or more per student. Vouchers for private school would run about $2,000 - $3,000 per student. That leaves a net benefit to the school system for education of between $3,700 to $7,000. (No, I don't believe that boards of education will decrease their budgets for less students.) So I don't believe they'll be taking any money away from public schools - they'll be saving public schools money.

Private schools do have the benefit of choosing children on the basis of entrance exams - so I don't expect a mass exodus to private schools. One of the biggest public school problems is lack of parental guidance, discipline, or interest. Those parents won't send their children to private schools. Maybe then public schools can spend all that extra money trying to figure out how to reach those kids. If they can't, at least they're all in one place.

We do have magnet schools cropping up all over the place, that could relieve some of the burden.

I just think that the NEA, and the educational establishment in general, have had more than enough time to get it right. Districts all over the place are proving that it doesn't matter how much money gets thrown at them, it just doesn't get right.

We'll never resolve the discipline problem, because Little Johnny would "never" do anything bad, and in today's permissive society, God forbid a teacher tries to discipline him. Private schools can kick Johnny out. Public schools can't. Perhaps a change in THOSE rules are in order.
