Subject: Shish, Boom , Bam!

Old Condoleeza Rice, cleaning up after George, leading the cheers. Of note was her characterization of North Korea as an "...opaque and suppressive regime..." which, of course, brought to mind Bush's moratorium on freedom of information and blacklisting of news agencies it doesn't like. When is a regime a regime? Let's see, when it is in power.

I'm still wondering how Bush has assumed all these presidential powers. I can't think of a precedence (except for Bush I) where we have provoked confrontation without quite a bit of heartfelt discussion. Shall Bush rename the executive branch the war branch?

Powell remains the paradox -- almost a tragic figure -- intelligent, thoughtful, able to demonstrate more than his gut reaction to immediate moment he doesn't comprehend. The paradox is that he is still in the repuke camp which means he either takes alot of baths or he does something to blunt his sensibilities. Having been there, to some extent, it has to make his stomach hurt to be associated with the fools Bush has surrounded himself with.

Does anybody else recall when Bush wasn't going to politicize September 11? Which was ironic because he really doesn't know how to "not politicize" anything. It is all he is and everything he does is political. He understands politics, to the exclusion of all else. because it is fluid and insubstantial -- a perfect home for liars and cheats. Imagine the staff meeting where an advisor says, "It might not look good to politicize the tragedy." and Bush, his face in that odd, brainless expression he has, says, "I like that idea!" While thinking, "Okay, how shall I spin this one so it doesn't look like we were sitting here asleep." Well, we were. How does that work, Ms National Security Advisor?

I think Bush perceives himself as the Caesar who will (finally) untangle the world and save it from itself -- whether or not he has the authority or mandate to do so. I don't believe the president has the powers he assumes and I worry about a president who assumes them.
