That the government is fragmented and compartmentalized; too big to effectively manage; and agenda driven. I think it has become epidemic in the last thirty years and, I don't know that the deterioration is a conscious thing as much as a built in flaw.

Listening today to common-tators telling us the whys and why nots of Fliescher's silly take on the Middle-East and Clinton. I think the glitch was the Jews replacing their PM when that one was getting too close to a compromise. Might hit close to home for the Bushkin in view of the religious right's propensity to impeach those they don't like. "Pass the biscuits, please."

Agencies hire interns who are practically fanatical about the missions of those agencies. I think it is bad for government because these people have selected agendas, then they carry them into government where they evolve from people who manage the peoples' business to "enforcers" of policy. Hmmm. Is policy enforced something like a law, or just somebody's power over something?

These agencies, headed by zealots, hire and promote zealots. They eliminate those who aren't driven by the mission, the power, and the name. There's about a thousand ways to "up the merit promotion" and the best absolutely aren't in control. We called the cookie cutter managers; the fast trackers who are in it for the career and politics. They are on top and they only allow like minded to be on top.

When we change reps and presidents and senators, we don't change the agencies or the layer of fluff they all have at the top. You don't get to the top because you are looking out for the peoples' work, so everybody at the top is there for other reasons. They are untouchable.

They can make a new agency head look like an idiot in a New York minute. They asked Reno to dance -- right after her appointment -- and she understood where the butter meets the bread from Waco on.

I don't know if the stuff is sinister or just plain old stupid facilitation -- pay a few dues, pay a few favors, but with the size of the government, a few can get awful large, especially when the elected, appointed, and career types are all doing it. Is big business important? Absolutely, because they have the jobs people need when they get bounced out or whne the kitchen gets too hot. At the bottom, Bush is taking care of business because they will take care of him. It is just that simple.

We better start finding people who want to do the job required -- the peoples' work. We better start redefining the values we expect from people in government. We better regain control or it will simply continue to grow in a self-serving way; and it will continue to defend itself, first against internal malcontents, then the press, then the people. A self serving government, married to self serving enterprises, is not a safe community for free people.
