I think, in a way, you are right Gent. People used to feel more accountable to their communities and neighbors. If a child did something wrong, and a neighbor saw it, she might grab him by the ear and drag his a** to his mother. Mother would not be likely to doubt it, or say mind yer own biz, you ol battle ax. The child would be punished, and if it was innocent, it was guilty of something else anyway, so the spanking was no doubt deserved.:)
