Subject: working for a ubfKorean

Hey Ralph,

I have some bad news for you. Not only do you work with ubfKoreans, it appears that you are working for a ubfKorean. One of the main beliefs at ubf is that your 'senior' is allowed to demand anythign and everything from you. And you, as the 'junior' must comply forever. If this person hired you, then you are even more in debted to him/her.

Your boss probably thinks of you as a rebellious subordinate, one who did not give thanks and honor to this person. So there is not only the ubf weirdness as a factor, but there is the eternal debtor factor which you are not participating in. Where will it all lead to? It doesn't sound like it will get you fired, but things would go better for you if you play the junior debtor game in some way. Let others know that you owe your job to this person, and the purpose of your work is to magnify this supervisor of yours.

You don't need to have any contact with the other ubfins, but you should face this issue with the supervisor. If you do not, then the supervisor will 'lose face' among the others because of you. In their culture, to 'lose face' is totally unacceptable. They would rather kill themselves than 'lose face.' Of course, they will fire you (or even their own mother) before allowing themselves to lose face. Do a google search for 'saving face' and read some of the articles.

Again, you should play the game with the supervisor, you need not worry about any of the others. In the long run, prepare the way to move on from that situation. It never changes with these ancient ubf people. Good luck and please keep in touch.
