Subject: Why did it happen?

I think in 15 years in the court, it would have been easily possible to give a better answer here.

I think the reason why this happened is that the JW's simply have so much money and time, while the ex members have no money or influence. And all the big cults like Scientology, Moon, JW's cooperate to form a lobby that influences the political decision-making and the climate, making people believe that 1) cults should be regarded as "minor religions" and 2) should always be tolerated under then name of "religious freedom."

I agree that there are some groups who really could be regarded as "minor religions." But these groups we are talking about, are not religions, they are mind control groups. Scientology is the most extreme example.

Ex members and dropouts have no lobby and no money (after leaving a cult, you usually have no more money). Nobody understands them. If the leaders and teachings were so bad, why did they submit? It is difficult to explain the mind control dynamics to somebody who has never experienced it, like a judge in court. There are some experts, but they are not enough, and always under attack from the cult apologist lobby with their "counter experts."
