Welcome Jim. It's great that you are writing here. But the best thing is that you became a believer in Jesus Christ.

Sorry that you have to be confronted with some problems of UBF after becoming a believer. Please don't let this ever shaken your faith. You know, there has been so much injustice and horrible things going on in church history, if you look at Christians and even Christian leaders, you could easily lose your faith. But look at Christ instead. There is a helpful book called "Soul Survivor: How My Faith Survived the Church" by Philip Yankey. Philip experienced legalism and many other bad things in the church, and nearly lost his faith because of that. But real faith is stronger, it does not look at people, it looks at Christ. In this sense, most of us ex UBFers could write a book "How My Faith Survived UBF."

Here are some of the problems that you will face when you stay in UBF:

- You can be more fruitful as a servant of God in a healthy environment than in a cult. You can grow yourself, you will become mature, and you know that if people reject you it's because of Jesus, not because of your being a member of a cult.
- You will support the cult leaders and serve as their legitimation if you stay.
- You are now saved by grace, but over time the gospel in UBF becomes a works based gospel that makes you burdened with guilt and/or proud about your efforts.
- You will lose your freedom in Christ.
- When you start to become dependent and believe the UBF leaders are the servants of God who are allowed to interfere with your life, you will be spiritually abused by them.
- You may undergo an arranged marriage with somebody who does not fit to you. Many UBF marriages ended unhappy or with divorce.
- You may unnecessarily lose contact with your family and friends and thus lose the chance to influence them positively.
- You may learn the Bible for 1 year or so in UBF, but after a certain time it will be boring repetition of all the same UBF stuff. After about 1 year, you can hardly learn anything new in UBF. You will not learn systematical theology, ethics, proper biblical hermeneutics, Bible languages, counseling and other useful stuff that is needed by somebody who wants to be a real shepherd. They will not allow that you study in a Bible seminary.
- They will not allow that you move to a town where UBF does not exist (except for "pioneering" but can not be sure when or whether they will allow this), they will not allow you to marry anybody outside UBF or anybody inside UBF who has not been chosen by the leader.
- You may become burned out and corrupt and cultish over time. You will lose your ability to make your own, responsible decisions and to follow the Holy spirit, because "orientation" is given by the UBF leaders.
- If you cowork in UBF's "spiritual order" under the top leadership which is very corrupt, and you know that, you share in their wicked work (2Jo 1:11).
- You may unintentionally adopt the abusive methods of UBF leaders and apply them to your "sheep".
