Hi Amanda,

What state do you live in? I'm in Massachusetts zone 6 and we get loads of cold rain and snow in winter. I've got some trunk forming Yuccas up here although some are still younger without much of a trunk yet. Which species are you interested in? In order of ease of growing, I'd rank the trunkers in this order:

Y. glauca v stricta (not a super tall trunker)
Y. recurvifolia/gloriosa (not all forms, some burn each year)
Y. elata
Y. schottii (needs some moisture protection)
Y. thompsoniana (needs some moisture protection)
Y. rostrata (needs some moisture protection)

I can't think of any others which really do OK in our area. If your a tad bit dryer or further south than us you may want to try:

Y. carnerosana
Y. faxoniana
Y. torreyi
