雲彩群賢錄(五)坎特主教聖奧古斯丁(St Augustine of Canterbury)

奧古斯丁生年未詳，卒於六零四年。義大利人，本篤修會會長。

在先，額我略未為教宗時，曾於市廛到一群金髮青年被賣為奴，心有不忍，詢知盎格爾（英格蘭）Anglo人。他感概的說有日將要他們成為Angelo（天使）。及後成為教宗，果付諸實行，派奧古斯丁等人前往英格蘭宣教。

這一行四十人於五九七年抵英格蘭坎特（Kent）。坎特國王伊圖博（Ethelbert）允許他們在坎特百里立基。六零一年國王且和很多國民都受洗。王后本來是高盧來的信徒。這樣基督教在英格蘭立了根基，建立了第一間座堂，設神學院。很快就開枝散葉。倫敦、洛切斯特等地，都成立了教區。奧古斯丁又幫助國王訂立法律，興辦學校，出版書藉。

當時愛爾蘭、蘇格蘭及鄰近諸島，承繼自更早羅馬及高盧人傳來的傳統，原有舍狄（Celtic，克爾得特）教會。聖高林巴（St. Columba）在不列顛島嶼，已開了近百間修院。再由修院派教士去傳道。舍狄教會自有主教及行政體系。而奧古斯丁則聽命於羅馬格列高理教宗，又得國王伊圖博支持。他很想整個英格蘭的教堂，歸納於一個教會體系內。兩個教會未能達於一致。除了行政，產業的問題之外，又復活節和洗禮的教義和儀文各異。後幾經歐陸的教會調停，漸趨一致。幾世紀後，在英格蘭的教會從羅馬教會脫出，成為聖公（安立甘Anglican宗）會。

教會以奧古斯丁的忌辰五月廿六為他的紀念日。
