Subject: Prospect Fire Department

Dear Steve,

I'm sorry you took the posts the wrong way. I can see what your point is...because I certainly believe not every person could ever be a firefighter (or policeman, soldier, etc) and I do admire the bravery of anyone who is. Nothing in my posts suggested I would be as brave, so I won't be taking you up on your offer to join the department. So on that note, you should not be insulted because that was NOT my point.

My point was that Prospect is a very small town and while you brought up those points about the usage of the equipment, in total, the building itself and other equipment, seems to be more than what could have been adequate for the needs of the town and within reason financially. You could always get the best you can get without overspending, and within reason for what is necessary to use. And if I recall, doesn't the firehouse have a bomb shelter? I don't think Prospect is high on the list of potential targets. Without justification, it is difficult for the average Joe taxpayer to understand how a bomb shelter is necessary. The other equipment, OK...but a bomb shelter???

And aside from this being an open forum where everyone can have an opinion, I also am entitled to an opinion inasmuch as my family have been residents of the Town of Prospect since 1969, and I lived there my entire life, until two years ago, and worked in town as well. I have always supported the Fire Department. Until I moved, I hadn't missed a Firemen's carnival or parade, and I always donated money in the boot at the Intersection of Rt. 68 and Rt 69 many times! And as far as supporting the Mayor, I even went so far as to boycott Connecticut Magazine when they put Prospect at the bottom of the list of towns in CT and cancelled my subscription! And I was one of the first people to display my "I'm from Prospect...the BEST small town in Connecticut" bumper sticker. I've seen Mayor Bob display his Christmas lights as he battled Father Cascia for the best display; I went to Algonquin, Community School, Long River and Prospect High School - oh wait, when I was growing up, there was no high school! Hah...my parents, fortunately paid for me to go to Notre Dame Academy so I wouldn't have to go to Wilby. I always went to the Town picnics when I was young, and was involved in the Prospect Grange Fair; I used to go to the 4th of July fireworks (way back when we used to have them), Memorial Day parades, I was in the Prospect Drum Corps...etc...I don't feel like continuing on with the list, but my point is that as a former resident of Prospect, and my mother only just moved this past month, we have been taxpayers in the town, and do have an opinion which we expressed.

Again, I only meant to say that from the average taxpayer's perspective, the firehouse just seems to be more than what we could have "gotten by with". And it was surprising how the issue had to be protracted with the school. Being a resident of Prospect, I didn't feel it was a problem to have the location of the school in Beacon Falls, though I know that was many people's problem with it...everyone wanted in their town, but it had to be in one or the other.

Anyway, just to clarify, my point was that equipment and building needs are important, but should be balanced with what is absolutely necessary (vs what is "nice to have" and what the town can afford. Also, that education is important.

But I certainly value your job and what you do and commend you for it.

BTW, the town I live in Indiana won't get a cat out of a tree but Prospect will - I commend you for that too. It sounds like a joke, but our neighbors recently found a poor little kitten 40 feet in a tree and we were all upset about it, especially when the fire department wouldn't come out and help.

Jennifer
