Here's the announcement:

June 9, 2004

Holy Cross names Former Crusader Mark Jerz '03 as a New Assistant Men's Basketball Coach
Worcester, Mass. - Holy Cross athletic director Richard Regan announced today that former Crusader Mark Jerz '03 has accepted a position as an assistant coach for the men's basketball team. Jerz will replace Mark Giovino, who left coaching to return to the private sector.
Jerz returns to Holy Cross after spending the past year as a graduate assistant at the University of Louisville under Rick Pitino. While at Louisville, Jerz assisted in opponent scouting through extensive film breakdowns, game preparation, while also assisting with on-campus recruiting efforts.

Jerz is a 2003 graduate of Holy Cross and a four-year letter winner for the Crusaders' basketball program. He averaged 5.4 points per game as a senior co-captain, while earning his bachelor's degree in economics. He led the Patriot League and ranked fifth nationally in three point shooting accuracy, hitting 50 percent of his attempts (33-of-66) from beyond the arc.

A native of Spring Lake, N.J., Jerz left Bergen Catholic High School as its all-time leading scorer with 1,210 career points.

And so we do have the announcement of Mark Giovino's departure made at the same time that the announcement of Mark's hiring is made. BUT...'02-'03 HC Men's Basketball Media Guide states he scored 1,206 points at Bergen Catholic. Also, the best to Mark's parents who are relocating from what we call the "Irish Riviera" (Spring Lake, NJ) to Florida. Rick, I'm sure you are familiar with this area of the Jersey Shore.

" Rick, I'm sure you are familiar with this area of the Jersey Shore. "

Yup....recall we reflected on our youth in these Joisee shore spots last year.

Spring Lake and Sea Girt were/are communities that seem to have been frozen in time circa 1940....throw backs to when life was simpler than today. Would you concur with that my friend ?

Who cares if he scored 1206 or 1210 points , what does it matter. The only thing that does matter is that he does a good job as an ass't coach here at HC. Best of luck to both Mark's.NTKHC64 sometimes I wonder about you.

Nomar:

No wonder you didn't get that job with the Elias Sports Bureau. (An attempt at humor!) It only matters because sports statistics are supposed to be accurate, right? Don't read a heck of lot into my observation. Of course I agree with what you say really does matter.

Rick:

Yes, I concur wholeheartedly but Jimmy Byrnes is gone. They should make it an historic site...the early home of the Jersey Shore Summer Basketball League.

Drove by the site last summer and my heart sagged....a weed invested, over grown vacant lot. But I did note the remnants of the one time buzzing with action lighted hoops court out back of the parking lot from the days of the once top-drawer Jersey Shore League tilts. Hard to swallow....

Someone told me awhile back that Jimmy Byrnes was still performing at some other gin mill at the Jersey shore. If so, he's gotta be in his 70's !

BTW, another old haunt....is it true that the Warren Hotel was torn down within the last year or so ?

I think that it was more than a year ago but there there was a major auction when the Warren shut down. I saw the lines around the block waiting to go in and buy the furnishings.

I saw a billboard the other day where Jimmy Byrne was performing. I think it was Edgar's in Sea Girt.
