bigda had an off-year this past spring but must have impressed the scouts in the summer collegiate league he played in last year.
i hope he waits another year for the draft of '05 as obviously there is very little money for 39th rounds picks

[> mlb draft -- purplehaze, 15:18:45 06/10/04 Thu

noticed that 13 ivy baseball players were drafted including the 48th overall (princeton outfielder who is also a wr on their fball team)
has anyone added up the pl players drafted.
the more i look at various drafts like football and baseball the more i find it difficult to believe that the pl compares to the ivy in any sport except basketball.

For what its worth, the pl went 8-5 vs. the ivies this year. As for draft picks, you are correct - the ivy league had 13 players drafted. 5 from Princeton. The PL had only two. Bigda and a rhp from Bucknell (25th round). Although it does not make up for the deficit, consider that the PL essentially has only 4 teams when it comes to the draft because teams are very reluctant to draft guys out of the service academies due to the post graduate service commitment. As you know, the Ivy League has 8 teams.

there were 2 PL draftees this year. the Ivy League is MUCH more competitive in baseball than the PL, although the PL has made decent strides in the last few years...HC excluded.

Your assertion that the ivy league baseball is much more competitive than PL baseball is not accurate. As I posted before, the PL was 8-5 vs. the ivies this year. Second, although it is not an official RPI - this is a pretty good site. http://www.boydsworld.com/baseball/rpi/rpi601.html

According to the RPI formula that the site uses, here are the latest rankings:

PL (avg. rank 201.6)
Army - 107
Lehigh - 178
Lafayette - 211
HC - 218
Bucknell - 223
Navy - 273

Ivy (avg. rank 197.8)
Princeton - 126
Dartmouth (HC beat them)-163
Harvard (HC split 2 games)-164
Yale (HC lost) - 175
Columbia - 214
Brown - 217
Cornell - 242
Penn - 282

As you can see, these leagues are pretty even with a slight edge to the ivies. MUCH more competitive is a gross overstatement.

[> hc vs. ivy baseball - good thread -- purplehaze, 22:40:05 06/10/04 Thu

nice job with some of those stats, and i agree we're not that far behind but it definitely seems the ivies have many more studs in various sports than the pl. they had 2 players drafted in the nfl draft and a few free agents. did the pl have 'any' players signed as free agents?
as far as baseball in concerned, princeton beat virginia in charlottesville in the regional which was a very impressive win. army lost twice but played well in losses to lsu and
college of charleston (2-1) in their regional.
i would like to add lacrosse to the sports where the pl can compete with the ivies, although the pl is very 'top-heavy' as hc and laf really can't realistically compete with their present commitment. we all hope that changes in the near future.
