It was an outstanding freshman team, with Texeira, Suidet, Jerry Foley, Jimmy Moore, and Chuck Mullane. Their sophomore year, it was assumed that Ron and Ed would start, and the 6'4" Hochstein, who was a year older, would move to small forward, since he could take it to the basket and drew a lot of fouls. But Donovan left Hochstein at center and put Suidet at shooting forward -- he was a great shooter and would have loved a 3-point line -- and Donovan's offense was Suidet throwing it up from anywhere, or pounding the ball into Hochstein and hoping he'd get fouled. That left Ron, who had been a post-up player his whole life, on the outside. Even when other teams went man against us and guarded Ron with a smaller, quicker forward, Donovan rarely tried to take advantage by posting Ron up. As an offensive player Ron regressed his sophomore year, not surprising since at that time there were very few 6'9" players who could play facing the basket. It was a frustrating experience, and he decided it wasn't worth it.

When I was at the Cross, Ron was still there but no longer playing. The rumors were that Donohue had somehow screwed him and that screwing set our recruiting efforts in the minority community back for a decade. I have no first hand knowledge of this but that was the story and there were very few black ball players after Ron for a long time (Stan Grayson being an obvious exception). Anybody else recall this spin on the situation?
