When he began at the University of New Hampshire,
Hilliard had gained valuable experience at several high schools and colleges. He served as head boy's basketball coach at William Barton Rogers Middle School in Hyde Park, Mass. From 1996-98, Hilliard was the head women's basketball coach at the University of Massachusetts in Boston. He gained valuable men's basketball coaching experience at three AMERICA EAST conference schools. He started at Boston University from 1990-91. After a year at Saint Michael's College, he worked at the University of Delaware in 1992-93. He returned to Boston University in 1993-94 and then went cross-town to Northeastern University from 1994-96. He began his college coaching career as an assistant men's basketball coach at the University of Massachusetts in Boston in 1989-90.

Hilliard is a 1988 graduate of the University of Maine in Farmington and earned his bachelor of arts degree in Business. He has also been a teacher at various institutions since 1989, most recently at William Barton Rogers, where he taught science, health and physical education.

In March 2002, Hilliard, along with Sean Doherty, received votes for the best low/mid major assistant coach in the Insiders poll.
