Subject: HC Hockey Out?
In reply to: hcsp04 's message, "HC Hockey Out?" on 19:44:32 07/14/04 Wed

rick and cf rivals are right on!
we all have to admit that at this time, only a (very) few of our teams can compete for patriot league titles. we are only giving our players and coaches a 'chance to compete', not a 'chance to succeed'! this reality is a travesty, especially in view of the distance our kids travel to get beaten.
secondly our facilities are second-rate, and therefore, along with our strict academic requirements, we have the built-in excuse for our failures, which is used all the time by our coaches, (and i guess they're not wrong)
in the olympic sports area, we could not compete in the 'nescac' (we all know that!). it would be worse than the pl.
right now the closest league in terms of compatibility with our athletes and facilities is the maac, and i have no interest with that affiliation, but that's the truth the way i see it.
conclusion: get with the 'patriot/ivy' program ! take a few campus visits and see what we need and stop making economic excuses about how we can't afford it. if we choose to maintain the highest academic standards, that's ok with me but ** get the facilities and get the athletes ** we can do it!

as far a the hockey is concerned, i think the ecac was not impressed with our plans for the women's program, and obviously they do not want to encourage our use of the centrum. this is a 'campus venue' league and they wanted a plan for the hart rink to be brought up to standards of the league. (seems to me) we did not give that to them.

The big thing for me is that I feel as if I, all of you, Coach Pearl, and the athletes have been misled. How can we be told that the school is willing to commit the resources to upgrade the hockey program, but then find out the ECAC is going to give us the shaft b/c we won't properly fund: A) the women's team, (the Cross will never live this one down), B) adequate facilities (never surprising but fixable for a school with a $400+ million endowment, or C) both A and B.

How de we financially support a school that apparently makes such, penny-wise pound-foolish decisions, as another poster put it. Answer: We stop giving until they learn. Young alumni support has hit its highpoint and is now declingin, and this is only going to hurt HC more.

Like I said a while back, "throw in the friggin kitchen sink" if you have to. They didn't and now HC takes a huge hit, which now has negative gender undertones. Nothing like taking the high road and the low road at the same time.

Cheers.
