Author: HC 1977
Subject: ECAC Update

I just to talked to somone close to the situation who passed along this information. The 11 remaining ECAC AD's voted to recommend QU. The first vote was 4 votes for HC, 4 for Quinnipiac, and 3 votes for Niagra. The second vote was QU 7 and HC 4. The 4 votes for HC= Dartmouth, Harvard, Princeton, and RPI.

The vote now goes to a Policy Committee who has the final say. From what I hear HC is trying to persuade Colgate to change its vote do to its affiliation of the Patriot League. The second school that could switch is Brown. Brown did not have an AD at the time of the vote so it is possible the policy committee member may be apt to switch his or her vote. If this occured HC 6 QU 5. HC would be in.

You have to assume that the QU AD is trying to have the 4 votes for HC switched in case something changes. This is definately a long shot but there still is hope.

Is HC just trying to sweet talk the ADs or are they also actually making concessions to get in!? If we are simply, saying, "c'mon guys we are Holy Cross" then hang up the skates and recommit to Atlantic Hockey. Does the Cross actually expect to see movement b/c of one PL affiliated school, a new AD, etcetera? Don't the presidents really make these decisions witin the ECAC/Ivy model, thus are we working on the right people with actual concessions!?

Also, what is the timeline for all of this backroom positioning? One would think it is down to the wire if, as reported on USCHO, the policy committee is to make a final vote by month's end.

Seeing that Brown's new AD is a former Colgate guy, is this good or bad?

Thanks for the update.

Cheeers.

If it is true that Colgate stabbed us in the back, I take back all the nice stuff I ever said about that school --

Does McFarland even care about this?

I have a very hard time accepting the fact, that Colgate, Brown, Yale, and Cornell did Not support our application. The Patriot/Ivy arrangement seems to be nothing more than of face value with no deep roots of supporting each other.
Now is the time for President McFarland to act as one and personally call or visit each above President and solicit their support. Let's see if the Presidents do run their schools! This should be an 8 to 3 decision in favor of HC. This could be a very positive step in supporting the athletic department at Holy Cross.

It's over. Holy Cross, a great academic and one-time athletic beacon, lost out to Quinnipiac.

If 77s original message was correct, it is NOT over. Yale's negative vote was probably understandible for local pr reasons [i.e. among the Connecticut community]. Based on its history Cornell's was understandible. HC has no historical ties with Clarkson, St. Lawrence or Union. The 2 critical votes would be Colgate and Brown - Hopefully appeals will be made on the Presidential level - where both the Ivy & Patriot leagues CLAIM that the real decisions are made. That claim will now be tested.

Pitt65, I hope you are right but I was recently informed by someone up on the Hill that that it is very unlikely at this point. I also got the distinct impression that the efforts you mentioned are not being made. I hope I am wrong.

The Colgate and Brown votes are shockers. I anticipated Brown would be one of our strongest supporters. Coach Pearl: Are they hoping you'll become their next head coach? And RPI votes "yes" but Colgate votes "no"!! After supporting HC's PL membership from the get go, I may well join the A-10 crowd.

Personally, I don't care who voted what....

My main focus is and continues to be on what/how/why HC's Trustees, McFarland and Regan either withdraw interest - OR - accept a delayed/revisited invitation.

If this is true (that Colgate voted for QU) I am truly suprised and I am literally scratching my head. Now I too wonder who is calling the shots. Our interm AD that has been involved in all of this is our hockey coach. I wonder if that has anything to do with it? Will our new AD have (coming from Brown) have a different opinion? And will our President make an overriding decision?

For the ECACs sake, if HC is willing to do what it needs to to become a part of the ECAC, they are a better fit and I hope some miracle takes place.

Could there possibly be some friction between Colgate and HC over the following ?

" The other challenge I should mention concerns football. Lehigh and Colgate are spending dramatically more on financial aid than we are in this sport. Right now, we are spending as much as the College's budget can handle. We are going to need to find some way of bridging the gap if those schools keep up with their current level of spending. " ( Dick Regan - 2002 )

that would not surprise me -- but this does seem to be the time for the president of Holy Cross to call the president of Colgate and directly request their vote -- it also appears that earlier reports that Harvard and Dartmouth supported the Cross were on target --

Please refer back to the summary of my phone call with McFarland re: this whole mess. On the one hand, it does appear that McFarland is planning on making "some" effort to lobby the other schools, but his other comments may more accurately reveal HC's true position on the bid. "It's the economy, stupid," to paraphrase the campaign theme of a popular prevaricator. Poverty or something akin was his entire theme. So too now.

Either the bid was a PR charade or the strategy went horribly wrong. I can't figure out which.

Hey, maybe we could convince the Ivies and the other rich ECAC schools to do a little revenue sharing with its poorer members. McFarland just has to be a little more creative in his strategy.

I can't wait to see how this shakes out and what the other schools say in the aftermath.
