I know you must be disappointed with the response so far....

Is this annually held at the Jersey shore or in northern NJ ? What's the usual attendance ?

Given the calibre of the speakers, is the light response thus far perhaps indicative of alumni apathy toward HC athletics....specifically football ?

Disappointed...not for myself of course but overall yes. We've held this at the Jersey Shore annually and we have many alumni in the Monmouth-Ocean area. The venue is located centrally, accessible by all the major north-south and east west highways. George Kaftan of the national championship men's team lives but a mile or so from the venue and has attended the prior events.Luke Sinkhorn who recently played football for HC has indicated he will attend as has Bill Marciano who played in the 60s.

We started this two years ago with Coach Willard as the speaker and drew about 75. Last year, again with Coach Willard as the speaker and Brian Wilson and Mark Jerz as special honorees as players from New Jersey we had about 50 in atttendance.

As for your last question, I would've thought that exactly the opposite would be true. We feel that Coach Gilmore should be a big draw and that Coach Flaherty who has a very impressive record as both a Big Ten soccer player at Michigan and as a coach would present the viewpoint of non-revenue sports in general and women's soccer in particular, another area that has received much discussion on this board.

An indicator of alumni apathy toward athletics? I would hope not. Athletics is and continues to be an important part of Holy Cross life though likely not as important as in my era. We've had a broad spectrum of alumni age-wise attend in prior years and I doubt everyone would suddenly lose interest in athletics in proportion to the response thus far. If you read the Q & A article done by Eric Tosi in the Spring 2004 Holy Cross Magazine I believe that doing so would serve as an incentive to come. He isn't appearing elsewhere in NJ prior to the start of the season as far as I know. I know he is appearing in RI next week.

All we do is secure the speakers through the cooperation of our athletic department and collect the money as they say. The event is certainly not held for the latter but is held to give alumni from the area a chance to meet and update themselves on aspects of athletics at the College.

It is a very worthwhile event and we hope that the turnout is in proportion to the program.

AIR, there is/was a 'Northern NJ Club' ( with traditionally the 3rd/4th largest alum base ). Is there a 'Southern NJ Club' under which this event is sponsored ?

A fellow grad just informed me that a 'President's Reception' took place about a month ago....I believe he said at Baltusrol GC....true ? Could this be possibly hurting attendance at this event ?

Yunno, I just received the HC mag that has a nice spread on Gilmore. It occurs to me that unless a grad is clued into this site, HC's site ( yawn ) or has a long-distance subscription to the Telegram/Gazette, it's conceivable that dozens of Jersey alums are just now getting alerted to the coaching change and who this fellow Gilmore is. Remember, this change - including Dan Allen's passing - hasn't exactly been front page sports news over an extended period. I doubt the Newark Star-Ledger even carried news on either event....but I could be wrong on that.

So maybe the arrival of the HC mag will spur interest last minute....hope so. Gosh, I would normally think that 60 + grads would have an interest in hearing and chatting with HC's Director of Athletics and the Head Coach of football. I recall attending a similar event in Westchester, NY with Rick Carter as the sole featured guest/speaker and like 150-160 grads of all ages attended on a weeknight.

Will look forward to a recap from you....

The formal name of the club it is the HC Club of Northern NJ and is the sponsor of this event. The venue is not in southern NJ although folks from Bergen County might say it is. I can drive 100 miles south from this event's venue and still be in NJ.
There is also a Philadelphia/South Jersey Club but most of their events are in PA. Some are held in cooperation with the NNJ Club. As far as I know, all NJ alums recieved written and email notice of this event.

The Preidential Reception is held at Baltusrol. It is a report by the President of the current status of events at the College. We center our event on athletics so it is a different emphasis.

I've picked up about at least seven acceptances today, so keep them coming.

I've been talking to several parents of football team members from NJ this afternoon. Most are in Worcester with jobs and/or working out on their own in preparation for the season. One set of parents is planning on attending as they live but a few miles from me and the event venue.
