Subject: Good luck NJ Club/NTK
In reply to: NTKHC64 's message, "NJ Club Reception June 15 RSVP Now Please" on 10:56:51 06/05/04 Sat

As I've previously posted, the RI Club is sponsoring a reception for Coach Gilmore (June 10) 5 days before you Garden Staters. We've got an attendee list in the low 30's so far which is not a disgrace but considering the proximity to the Cross, a new coach speaking and the hot/cold hors d'oeuvres are free, it's not a turnout that I'd want to brag about. Now, I've got reason to believe from hearing from others that some folks might just show up as the art of RSVP'ing seems to have been lost, especially among younger folks. But the gate crashers will probably only offset the folks who did sign up but just won't show.

My impression has been that the rabid HC athletics fans were those who graduated in the 30's-60's. Once the college went co-ed, there were a lot of other attractions besides sports on campus. Sure, there was a resurgence of interest during the Carter/Duffner years in football because it's always fun (and easy) to root for a winning/dominant team. The older alums seem to have a greater sense of the value of what HC meant to them and would support the teams win, lose or draw. I don't see this in the younger alums. They'll support a winner but mediocre won't cut it. The older alums are dying out and/or getting to the point where it becomes physically difficult or impossible to get to sports events. What struck me the last 5 years that I've been going to Homecomings is how few people actually go inside Fitton, even for one minute. The freshman field parking lot is full but most of the young alums are there the entire time kegging and socializing - not that there's anything wrong with that! The students have been turning out at the Hart for the basketball teams the last few years but didn't turn out this immediate past season when both teams started losing. Support goes to winners, not "losers" nowadays.

So, my theory is that if Coach Gilmore can get a team to win 10 games a year, THEN he'll get support. Win fewer than 5 games a year and Fitton will continue to look like a ghost town.

Again, I am not an alum but I have supported the HC BB program for almost 30 yrs.

As an outsider and living in the Worcester area, I get to see alot of what is and isn't going on at HC. The net result is mediocre.

I know most of you on this board are true purple die hard alums that would probably support HC if they went D3 in FB and continued in the PL for BB, but the true facts are you are very few in #'s. I know alot of HC alums in the 25-40 age group who live in this area who I begged to come to some BB games with me over the years and they refuse. They say the PL is second rate and they don't wish to support it. I've been a season ticket holder for BB for 10 yrs, and the student support is very weak. The only exception was the last 4 home games of 2003.

HC needs to make a seriously commitment in their programs.
They need some kind of major announcement to shake up some interest. Hockey to ECAC? That will gain some, FB to win some games? Who knows, w/o scholarships and 10+ yrs of losing, most fans have checked out, myself included. BB to a true mid-major?? This would be the ticket!! A move to a conference like the A10 would show fans that HC is serious about BB an isn't going to try to keep pushing that they almost beat Kentucky 4 yrs ago! People don't want to hear how you almost made it, they want to see what are you doing to build and improve on it. HC has not done that.

When an administration shows and says it's happy where it is and that place is no where near where most alums or fans want, you have the situation that you are facing at HC.
