ECAC In Final Stages on Possible Expansion
by Adam Wodon/Columnist
ECAC athletic directors and administrators will meet via conference call Tuesday, July 6 to discuss the final decisions on how many schools, if any, will be admitted to the league. If all goes well, an announcement could be made by the end of that week.
"We've had some very good discussions following our site visits," said ECAC commissioner Steve Hagwell. "Different people went to different sites, so we need to get that information together for 11 schools and make sure we're comparing apples to apples.
"Trying to put that information together, and to be fair to the schools involved, it's an undertaking. We're going through it methodically. We don't want to rush, but we don't want to prolong it either."

After Vermont announced its intention to leave the ECAC for Hockey East starting in 2005-06, the ECAC opened up a bidding process for schools interested in joining the conference. Five schools applied for membership — Quinnipiac, Holy Cross, Mercyhurst, Niagara and Sacred Heart. League officials and athletic directors from the existing schools went on site visits over the course of the past few weeks.
Sources have indicated growing support for Holy Cross and Quinnipiac. Building issues may be the biggest remaining concern with those two schools. Holy Cross has reached agreement to play games in the spacious Worcester Centrum, while Quinnipiac has plans to construct a new campus center and rink, pending funding. According to sources, Quinnipiac has agreed to play ECAC games on the road until its facility is complete.
Hagwell was also among five Division I conference commissioners to meet in New York City with College Sports Television this week. It followed up what Hagwell said was a productive meeting with CSTV officials at the Coaches Convention in Naples, Fla., in April.
"We talked about ways, going into the season, of helping each other," Hagwell said. "We recapped a little bit, met some new people, and talked about different approaches to [broadcasting] the game to make it more attractive.
"They've been very receptive to things I've thrown at them, such as different scheduling ideas. They can't accomodate everything I want, but they've been great to work with."
Hagwell expects a deal with CSTV for airing ECAC games next season to be finalized shortly.
The commissioners also spent some time with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, something they also did last year.
"We talked about things that are of common interest — equipment deals, referee issues — to make sure we're on the same page," Hagwell said.

What Should We Make of This? -- zipp, 14:16:30 06/30/04 Wed
What (if anything) do you guys read into that story?
The "pending funding" comment (referring to QU's potential rink) seemed a little ominous, but at the same time the "spacious" facillity (referring to HC's use of the Centrum) comment seemed clearly backhanded.

Re: What Should We Make of This? -- HC1843, 17:15:06 06/30/04 Wed
I read it completely the other way, but that's just me.
spacious = able to handle the demand ECAC hopes HC will garner.
pending funding = poor school that hasn't been able to raise even a third of what is needed to build the complex.
That being said, I will not be surprised if we lose out...all b/c our admin can't say the "S" word. I mean they can give dole out $$$$ to the Canadians but say scholarships, how dare you!!!
Still crossing my fingers though.
Cheers.

Canadian Players--implications -- KY Crusader '75, 20:45:18 06/30/04 Wed
I know that we have quite a number of Canadian players on our team. Irrespective of the scholarship situation, is that taken as a positive indicator of HC's increased emphasis on/commitment to hockey? Do our competitors for the ECAC spot also have a significant Canadian presence??

Re: I hope your alumni have weighed in... -- Go...'gate, 22:26:34 06/30/04 Wed
on the issue of ECAC admission, as well as Holy Cross's need to be agressive in seeking admission. This ECAC thing really looks like a close shave within your administration and a little yelling from graduates (especially generous ones) would have been helpful in motivating the leadership to present the best possible case for admission.
I know that Colgate would be very happy to see you in the league and I hope it comes out that way.

What to make of it... -- JRGNYR, 08:14:49 07/01/04 Thu
I would not be shocked to see both HC and Quinnipiac receive invitations. QU obviously boosted its position by agreeing to play all ECAC games on the road while their building is constructed.

rooting for HC but the arena -- 'gate88, 08:57:07 07/01/04 Thu
is a problem. ECAC teams all play on campus in relatively cozy, packed rinks. Empty seats at the Centrum are not a plus. ECAC is loaded with Canadian players (with US prep schoolers making-up most of the rest).

sorry, I've been to a ton of Brown games and they are hardly ever packed -- not even close - and the ave. attendance number for the ECAC as a whole is no where near total capacity -- Colgate draws well but others do not

I saw Dartmouth visit Princeton last November, and there were about 1100 there, and it was pretty full. If I remember right, it was right after Thanksgiving, or thereabouts during the schedule...i.e. early in the campaign. You'd be hard pressed to get 1100 for a regular season game at the Hart at the moment. In three years, with constant program improvement, 1100 would be a reasonable goal.

Re: Canadian Players--implications -- sader1970, 09:33:38 07/01/04 Thu
Kesiwick's comments are consistent what I've heard from HC administration sources that the size (or lack thereof) of the Hart is overstated as an issue and, again, the Centrum is there for us when we really think the ECAC opponents, or others are going to pack the house. Though no number was given to me, my strong impression was that maybe we'd "need" to play 3 or 4 games a year at the Centrum.
As for nationality of players, though I don't think HC draws too many prep schoolers, we have a sizeable contingent of Canadians. So when they play "Oh, Canada", we'll have as many teary eyes as any other ECAC team.

Oh, I don't know, maybe,..... Women's Hockey? But that's a wild guess.
Seriously, people forget that acceptance is a Men's and Women's package. So we ARE going to need to upgrade the women's program anyway. in fact, the scholarship issue may be even more of a factor on the women's side.

Not required to do so to be in compliance with TITLE IX.

ECAC and Scholarships -- FootballAlum, 12:09:39 07/01/04 Thu
The women's program is a joke...and besides how long would the college be able to justify full scholarships for four programs and not the rest of the athletic department?
I think HC is better off staying with the status quo and recruiting as many players as they can for hockey with financial aid.

Re: ECAC and Scholarships -- Zipp, 12:24:21 07/01/04 Thu
Funny, I heard some hockey players say the same thing about the football team, but don't worry they were only basing that on the the records of the two teams.
Not sure how you can make any assesment of a program that's only been varsity for a couple of years? Actually sounds to me like you didn't even realize HC had a varsity women's hockey team. Well that's ok because not a lot of people realize we have a varsity football program either.

And you probably spent your four years on the hill in Dinand...
Yes I know we have a women's program and my assesment of it is that they a lot of former figure skaters with pent up frustrations and they are trying to play ice hockey. A women's team at HC is never going to take off with the other real quality programs within New England.
Watch your comments about football!

You'd be suprised about women's ice hockey -- colgate13, 13:28:47 07/01/04 Thu
Women's Ice Hockey in general is an up and coming sport for female athletes. You'd be suprised how good HC could get at it with the necessary support (of course support is the operative word.)
An example:
Colgate took it's club team to varsity D-III in 99-00 and went 21-4. It's first game of the year was a loss to D-I power St. Lawrence 8-0. In 02-03 we went D-I and went 12-21-1. Growing pains to be expected of course. Last year we went 16-17-3. Not too bad for a 5 year old program and only a 2nd year in D-I. The real highlight is in the ECAC playoffs, Colgate defeated nationally ranked St. Lawrence 1-0 in the second game at SLU.
The point is that the women's sport is still very much growing and the "established" powers are by no means untouchable. In fact, now is the time to make the move into the sport as it begins to take off.
Looking at the great schools that offer ice hockey, if I had a little girl at home, I'd be putting some skates on her and teaching her how to shoot!

colgate 13's got it right. Of all schools, Brown University has one of the best ladies hockey teams in the country and they aren't good at anything other sport.

You'd be suprised about women's ice hockey -- FootballAlum, 14:28:37 07/01/04 Thu
Brown, Dartmouth, Harvard, etc...those are the programs I was referring to when I said other programs in New England.
To Rick:
Why doesn't there need to be compliance with Title IX if HC were to add men's hockey scholarships???

Isn't compliance measured over an entire program and not sport-for-sport?
Otherwise, since there is no women's football, there'd never be an issue with that sport.
