I recently got a new puppy, Blossom. I purchased a collar from a dept store. It was some type of nylon weave. When I put it on her she began to scratch at it as pups do until they get used to them. After about an hour I noticed that the collar seemed snug. What had happened was that as she scratched at it, the weave actually tightened up around her neck. When I took it off of her the collar was actually curved instead of straight as it had been initially. Needless to say, I threw it away & purchased a leather one. I'm glad I was there when this occured. Don't get me wrong, I would never leave a newly collared pup unsupervised. Hope this bit of advice helps someone.
