Henry scouted for me the last time I brought Nevada Zack out from Arizona. The Santa Caligon club hosted the trial at Lee's Summit that year. I was braced with Dennis Burgess and we ran in the last brace of the championship. We'd had an early morning shower and it had turned hot so birdwork and races suffered all morning. We cast off south of the road by the big dairy barn, made the loop and headed north. True to form, Zack was eating up the country side and disappeared to the front about half way back to the club house. After we passed the point where we lost contact I sent Henry on a scouting mission. Zack showed to the front while Henry was gone. We almost lost Zack in the bear trap just past the end of the runway and I was trying to put him in a row of pines (where I knew there was a covey) up on the north end of the grounds when the Marshall called time. Henry reported that he had hit every covey he knew except the one in the pines by the red barn because it was right in front of us. Something about not wanting to get caught in front of the handler and judges. Later Terry Feitz reported that he watched Zack stand the covey by the barn until well they left, before he came looking for me. He said something about not wanting to see a grown man cry. By the looks of Henry's horse when he got back in, he'd covered a lot of ground while he was out. We'd had a race that had the gallery talking and all we needed was a find. I've second guessed myself a few times over that one. But I've never doubted that the dog and the scout put every ounce of effort and talent they had into going for the gold. If there are field trials in heaven and Zack and I get another run, I'm going to make sure I've got Henry riding right behind the marshal.
