I am getting ready to attend a local field trial. I got the Field trail book by I believe Mr. Brown but have not had time to read it. Do I need to join the AFTCA,NBHA or the ABHA to run in a fiels trial????? I am planning on being at the Grovespring trial and possibly running in the puppy or a derby so is AFTCA membership a requirement?

Haven't posted here in what seems like forever, but about ten days ago, I volunteered to catalog a dear friend’s doggy/horsey library, which I knew was quite extensive and probably had some real gems in it! Clicking along fairly quickly with a book cataloging program I purchased, I came upon a real treasure – actually treasureS!

Contained in the box I received day before yesterday were four (count ‘em – FOUR) copies of A.F. Hochwalt’s “The Modern Setter” – there’s one copy of the 1919 first edition, a copy of the 1923 “Second Edition, Revised and Enlarged”, and two copies of the 1935 “A Companion Volume to the 1923 Edition – with complete Index for Both Volumes.” I had heard all my setter life about Mr. Hochwalt and his books, but this was the first time I’ve had an opportunity to get my hands on them.

Of course, all cataloging work stopped right then and there, and I proceeded to read, and read, and read. And then the thought occurred to me that others would surely be interested in what is contained in the First Edition about the Irish Setter – two chapters: Early American History and Current History. Of course, at the time of publication “current” was 1919!!!!

So, since I’m a pretty fast typist, if I do say so myself, I started typing those Irish chapters into a Word document. They amount to 24 pages, including scanned photographs.

The book is long out of copyright, so I am offering to share the chapters that I have available. If your server can handle an attachment of that length, just send me your email address and I’ll be happy to share! Frankly, it’s a must-read for anyone with an interest in the history of our breed.

Back in the early 80's (I was in my late teens) my family had a pointer that I, my brother and my father hunted.I went to feed him one night in January and his feet were swollen and he was run ragged from continuous hunting,I decided there I was going to get my own dog,that lead me to my 1 and only Red dog.I had seen pictures of an Irish setter my father had when I was a child,and being young and ignorant,I bought the first Irish setter pup I came across. Chip was soft on point,wanted to creep in right on top of a bird before he locked and flagged but....the dog was bird crazy.He would hunt at about 75 to 125 yards from daylight till dark and was an outstanding retriever. If he was with us we never lost a bird.We used him to retrieve ducks and when on a dove shoot,I would fire at the first bird and when I saw it was hit I switch to the next one with out a thought, knowing Chip would mark it and find it. He was in a great part responsible for me limiting most times because no birds were ever lost. He was the best hunting partner I've ever had, loyal always ready and full of go,in addition he got he through the most difficult time in my life. I lost him to a car on the road in 1985.
I had another bird dog after that but I missed that red flash and the retrieving perfection,the Tennessee quail crash setted the matter by 1990.
Since then I have followed feist dogs as a replacement but it's just filling time,it's not the same.
I have always wanted to have another red dog and bird hunt again,but the "bird" element is practicly nonexsistant now in this State except on game farms.
My question,for those of you who have done it,should I make the leap and try to find another Red bird dog knowing the hunting will be on the preserves and the only wild birds he could hunt would be dove shoots. I'm not sure that if I head down that road,I won't be dissapointed at the new reality of bird hunting now.
Oh how I miss that red dog working in the fencerows and thickets,his bell tinkling. I enjoyed it for only a short time,but in all my other outdoor pursuits in the years since, none have ever come close to bringing me the joy that did. What should I do?

While out running my oldest dog today. I started thinking back to when I got him and first started field trials.
He has slowed way down now and doesnt make the same mistakes he use to make out hunting. He is older and wiser and cant run as fast or as far so he cant afford to make mistakes anymore.
Watching him run or plod along at a walking pace (finally) I thought he was suppose to be a walking hunting dog. It only took nine and a half years for that part to come about.
While out watching him hunt I remember my first trial. I remember he found about 3 or 4 birds. One bird that flushed I shot it but didnt kill it and it flew about 200 yards into a stand of timber. The field trial is being held in a wheat stubble field. The trees are out of bounds. Because I did hit the bird I gave the dog a hard FETCH and after it he went. I stood there in my little 3 foot cirlce. You cant move more then that or else the retrive doesnt count. I gave the dog enough time I thought to find the bird. So I whistled to him to come to me. He stepped out of the woods but it was so far away, and I coundnt see just right, so I gave him a hard fetch here. Well he didnt like that at all. I saw him drop something and go off hunting. I had the judge go ride over to that spot and sure enough there lay a bird.
If I had only just called him to come to me instead of giving such a forced command he would have brought that bird to me. I dont think since that day he has ever failed to bring me all the birds right to my hand.
So that was one lesson learned. Know when to give a command that a dog does and does not like to do happily while in a field trial.
Here is a good one I learned the hard way. In a trial in Washington my dog had found and retrived 2 birds. When my dog pointed a third bird I was getting pretty happy. I went in to flush the bird but it only flew 10 feet away and only 5 or 6 feet high. It was so quick I didnt do anthing and neither did the dog. So since no harm or foul I went in to flush the bird again. This time I was thinking as soon as the bird flushes I shooting the gun in the air and sending the dog on a crippled bird retrieve.
Well the bird flushed I shot and I'll be dang if that bird didnt come to life and fly its little heart out and go way deep in the woods out of bounds. I just stood there. Doumbfounded. Well the dog didnt find the bird and that ended that field trial. Another lesson learned.

Henry Taylor of Grain Valley,Mo. died the last part of may.Henry was one of the founding fathers of the Santa Caligon Irish Setter Club. In the 60's and 70's Henry ran red setters here in the midwest.His kennel prefix was Whirlaway. Some of his red dogs were: Whirlaway Pat (Ike Jack Kendrick son),Whirlaway Chief,Jhonny Popper. Henry and a gentleman by the name of D. Jhonson were instrumental in bringing Ned LeGrande's red setters to our part of the country. Henry Taylor was introduced to me in 1967. My dad had told me he would pay half of a birddog pup.My research at the public library Indicated if you found Irish Setters bred for the field, their would be no equal. I bought my first red setter after a disagreement with my dad. He didn't consider the red pup a good candidate so I bought Lady on my own. A few years latter I decided I wanted to raise a litter. I asked advice from by boyscout leader who field trialed. This was my first contact with Mr. Henry Taylor. This man was opinionated,sometimes rude and obnoxious. He was one of the BEST men I ever met.Henry would help anyone when asked.When I decided to break my first dog this was the man I asked for advice.When I went to my first horseback trial at Lee's Summit,mo. I rode a horse furnished by Henry. The Shepler's saddle that I ride originally belonged to Henry. The redsetter fratenity lost a good one.
I will miss him.

Back in the early sixties my dad purchased a female irish in KC. and had her bred to Henry Taylor's Whirlaway Chief. From that breeding I selected one of the females for my own and boy was I surprised in her work, both in the field and to me. This was a relationship that lasted 12 years with many stories on her relentless hunting. We raised no less than 5 liters that were purchased as far away as South America and Canada. I even ran Kris (my irish) againist some of the best dogs in the area and it was a one dog show. Due to the demise of quail in Missouri it didn't seem fair to raise setters to hunt quail that vanished from the area(thats is another story.

I am now 69 years old but I sure miss my Irish Setters.

Looks like I have a dog that is prone to hypoglycemia...Had a near episode this last week & was able to stave off any seizure by feeding an energy bar...One of the things I'm reading is making sure I'm using a very high quality dog food, so thought I'd run it by our folks here. Better conditioning, better food seems to be the solution. Anyway, what are you all feeding? I've been using Kirkland premium which is made by Diamond. Never had a problem with it, but reviews suggest it's a mid-level quality dog food. Any input is appreciated.

I dont know how many of you read all the reports in the Field. The report on the subject trial I think is interesting. The judge/reporter Mike Majewski shows an entry of 30 pointers. However, he reports that Dr. Brown's SETTER was killed on the road by vehicle. also, Bob Gove ran Restlee Red Toolman. Unless Bob ran a pointer I think this dog is a red setter. So why does Mr. Majewski report he saw 30 pointers? Is he so bias that he only saw pointers while he judged. Unbelievable that a judge who supposedly saw all the dogs doesn't recognize the difference between pointers and setters. If I was trialing in the 19th region I would be gunshy to run under this man. If it doesn't matter in reporting the dogs that ran correctly, maybe all reports should show "entries" only. That would take care of the problem and people who have any kind of dog wouldn't have to know if their favorite breed of dog was running in any trial unless they placed. Personally, I think it is laziness not to get it accurate.

Hi all, been a while since I've posted. Moved from Central Idaho to North Idaho and been pretty crazy. Anyway, took my two Red Setters Hoolie & Shooter to Eastern Montana to do some pheasant hunting. Got an invite from a friend who has a very well respected pointing lab kennel and a chance to see how these red dogs do in the field...I know I'm not completely objective, but I am honest....It was no contest! The red setter imho were far above in ability to find, scent, point, hold and believe it or not retrieve. My bud had along one of his dogs with a master hunter title on him and my shooter dog was right there with retrieves both land and water. Don't get me wrong, those labs are killer. My bud is a pro trainer and was pretty blown away as we had not only solid points, but also incredible retrieves! We all watched my Shooter dog track a downed and running rooster close to 150 yards, disappear over a creek bed and reappear and deliver the rooster to hand...Just amazing. Anyway, thought I'd report how our red dogs compare running side by side with some top dogs of other breeds.

Last weekend while camping in the mountains, in NE Washinton, I saw a pickup go by with a Red Setter in it. Looked to be a young female.

Now that bird season is open and everyone is out hunting the dogs. Dont forget some basic 1st aide supplies while hunting. Also dont forget to enter your vets phone number in your cell phone along with the after hours phone numbers should you need an emergency on the weekends or after business hours.
I have 3 of my dogs trained to porcupines but I was unable to teach my Pal dog this last weekend. To make a long story short within 10 minutes of the first day out hunting he found a porcupine.
I did not have any pliars with me. I did not have the vets home phone number on my cell phone. I had to travel 30 minutes time to a town and find a phone book to look up his home phone number. He wasnt home. I then searched a phone book and found a veternary office that was close to where I was but it was after hours and not open. Lucky for me a local person knew the vet and knew where he lived. I ws albe to call him at his house and he agreed to come help me. Finally after almost 1 hours time I had some help for my dog!
Boy was this a reminder for me to be better prepared for accidents that happen to the dogs while out hunting.
The vet said to pull out more then a hand full of quills will be very hard on the dog and it will be very hard to handle the dog. Some of the quills that he pulled out sure took some VERY HARD pulling to get them out.
I had a friend out hunting this weekend and their dog got into a porcupine also. They were camped out miles from anyone and they had to pull the quills them selves. They said pull 2 or 3 and wait 5 minutes or so and pull a few more. But the dog only had 25 or so quills. It took 2 people to hold the dog!
Out of all this I learned to enter all the vets phone numbers in my cell phone along with their after hours phone numbers. I knew where a vet was that was open 24/7 but that was hours of drive time away from where I was.

It has been reported on another message board that Keith had an accident during a trial and fractured his Pelvis. He apparently will not need surgery but will be laid up for at least twelve weeks.

The Indiana County PA Humane Society has informed us that they recently seized a kennel in the Blairsville-Greensburg area with numerous red setters. The National Red Setter Field Trial Club is assisting the Humane Society in finding rescue homes for these dogs. The dogs are a variety of ages and sexes, and some have socialization issues (very shy) due to the conditions at the time they were seized. If you or someone you know has an interest in possibly adopting one of these dogs, please contact the Indiana County Humane Society.

Our club is aware of the individual who was operating this kennel, and these dogs are true red setters; we would be confident to say that they probably have hunting ability, but obviously, will need some socialization and training work. I just read the sad news on the American Field web page that James Fike of Colorado has passed on. The last twelve months or so have not been kind to the Red Setter world.

It is with great sadness that I share this news with members of the NRSFTC. Tom Moffat, lifetime member died on January 31st of complications related to a ruptured appendix. Tom was 84 years old. The Moffats have not been able to attend trials in many years but they still enjoyed reading about the club activities and following our quest for the purest challenge. During their active years with the NRSFTC, the Moffats each held various club offices—including that of editor The Flushing Whip.

The Moffats celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary on December 28th. Marjorie and Tom lived throughout lower Michigan during the early years of their marriage but in 1985 they began spending their summers on Gulliver Lake on the Upper Peninsula. They liked it so well that they moved there permanently in 1994. Please take a moment and send your condolences to Marge. She’d love to hear from old friends and new. Id like to hear how some of you were able to place your dogs in a field trial. Lets hear your version of the story. What did you do good to make your dog look good in the judges eye? Did you do some special out of the way training like, having a non hunting dog disturb your dog while on point so you could teach the dog to not break point even when a dog might intefer with your dogs? Im fixing to train for that in the next week. I have also taught my dogs to retrive the bird up to my chest by standing on there back legs. I plan to pull that one out on the judges just everyonce in a while. Not as a regular bird to hand delivery.
Well my dogs have never won a trial, so I dont have any good stories. The only story I had where my dog placed is when in the last minute of the brace my bracemates dog when on point. I called my dog to come to me. On his way to me he say the dog on point. He honored the point and in doing so he earned enough points to come in 2nd in a trial.
Lets hear some good stories on how you and your dogs did in a trial.

The previous message was about the death of a magnificent Red Setter, Ch Rock the World. She was an 8x NRSFTC Champion and 8x RU NRSFTC Champion as well as KY Open Shooting Dog Champion and a 4x High Performance winner. But more than anything,she was the beloved pet of Tim and Kris Hammons.
Today I learned that another great red dog had passed on. Ch Prosper died on December 2nd at 15 years of age. "Jimmy" had a long competitive career amassing a total of 85 placements including 6 championships and 6 runner-up championships. His most notable win was the Region 2 Am Shooting Dog Championship in 2001.
In the past few months, our club has lost some very notable red setters. Here are a couple more names that come to mind besides Rock the World and Prosper; the Colmores lost Hollywood, the Edwards lost Diddle and Come Back Shag Dancer and Chris Hall lost Gracie.... I'm sure, unfortunately there are many many more. Some red setters been great multiple champions. Other have simply been champions of our hearts. But all were loved, cherished and will truly be missed!
In the Feb March issue of the Whip, I'd like to pay tribute to dogs loved and lost. Have you lost a dog you'd like me to include? While eagerly awaiting any news from Missiouri trial, I'm wondering if any NRSFTC member from Princeton, MN, owns a dog entered in the "Cutest Dog Contest" named MOXI.

I've been voting almost daily for this youngster since the contest started and have wondered all along just who she is! Any info would be helpful!

Yesterday we returned home from a field trial and found Rock the World curled up in her bed, having passed away sometime during the day. She had been slowly declining in the past few months, so it was not a great surprise.

She was a wonderful dog who gave us many a victory and many a thrilling performance, whether recognized by the judges or not. It was sheer joy to watch her run, and heartbreaking for both her and us when she just couldn't do it any more and we had to retire her.

We will have her cremated, then Tim and I will take the ashes to the CKWMA and go out on horseback, spreading the ashes at her favorite spots and rembering the good times.
