Silverchair may quit shows
Posted by:Andreas Vural

From The Sunday Herald
March 28, 2003

SILVERCHAIR frontman Daniel Johns may quit live performances after his current Australian tour, he has revealed.
Johns has told the first edition of the relaunched Juice magazine that he prefers writing and recording to performing on stage.

The singer-songwriter said he felt like a fake playing the rock star.

"When I'm on stage I generally feel like a fraud," he said.

"The only way I can play live and not hate myself is to create a whole new character and be someone else.

"When I'm on stage it's not me at all... Otherwise I'd just be a mess."

The 23-year-old said he'd been feeling that way since touring to support Silverchair's 1997 album Freakshow.

Instead of performing he wants to concentrate on writing and recording, which he said brought him close to God.

"When I'm in the studio and when I'm writing I feel so content within myself," he said.

"I feel like I'm connected to God in some way. I don't know how but I feel like this is what I'm meant to do.

"I wake up in the morning and it feels like someone has Fed Ex-ed me a delivery of melodies and harmonies and I come down and I write them and it feels like my job on Earth is to write music."

Johns said his performances were like an ad for his work, but he was still very proud to display his songs on stage.

He also said bandmates drummer Ben Gillies and bassist Chris Joannou still loved playing live.

The band's national Across The Night tour, in support of its fourth and latest album Diorama, has sold out.

The new Juice magazine is out on Monday.
