Alice In Chains singer dead at 34

Layne Staley, lead singer of Alice In Chains was found dead in Seattle today, a victim of a drug overdose. He was 34.
The body was discovered at his home Friday afternoon Seattle time but police say the singer may have been dead for a few days. Staley had long been known as a serious drug user.

Alice In Chains are regarded as co-founders of the Seattle grunge scene ranking alongside Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden.

The band formed in 1987, fronted by Staley. While Staley gave AIC their grit it was guitarist Jerry Cantrell who polished the sound and gave them their commercial appeal.

The band was huge. 1992's "Dirt" went platinum in its first year and had sold over 3 million units in America by the end of the following year. The next album "Jar Of Flies" debuted at #1 in America.

The next album "Alice In Chains" also debuted at #1 in 1995. There hasn't been another album of new material from Alice In Chains since, pretty much as a result of Staley's inability to get his head together. Sony have released a live album, their performance from MTV Unplugged, a box set and a best of album to keep up the Alice In Chains profile.

Since 1995, only two new Alice In Chain songs have been recorded and released. The box set included "Died," the second of two previously unreleased Layne Staley/Jerry Cantrell compositions recorded in September-October 1998 and produced by Toby Wright and Dave Jerden (the first, "Get Born Again," was released on gold record Nothing Safe -- The Best Of The Box in June 1999).

An autopsy on the body is expected to happen Saturday afternoon. Layne will be remembered as a talented but tortured soul.
