Who watches the TV show Ed? I like it, it's a good show. Well, guess what? The guy who plays Ed, Tom Cavanagh, is from Ottawa, and, well... read this article from the newspaper. :)

For Ottawa DJs, appearance on TV show a dream come true

By Tony Lofaro

Ottawa Radio DJs Rush & Mauler will appear as extras on Ed, the TV Show starring Ottawa-born actor Tom Cavanagh.

The Xfm duo visited the Ed set in Northvale, New Jersey, last week and appeared in a courtroom scene of an episode expected to air next month.

In the NBC show, Cavanagh plays Ed Stevens, a New York lawyer who leaves his wife and returns to his hometown to pursue his high school crush, and buys the local bowling alley.

Rush said the offer from Cavanagh came unexpectedly.

"We've been interviewing him on our radio show for a couple of years and just asked as a joke if we could come down and be extras," said Rush. "He said if you make it to Jersey, I'll guarantee I'll put you on."

They drove last week to the set in Northvale, which doubles as Stuckyville, Ohio, the hometown depicted in the TV series, and hung out with Cavanagh and other crew members.

Although Cavanagh was born in Ottawa, he spent his childhoond in Lennoxville, Que. and in Africa, before he returned to Quebec. He also studied at Queen's University.

Cavanagh has worked in Canada as a series regular on Jake & The Kid and No Place Like Home, appeared in Blue Light beer commercials and starred as "dog boy" Doug Boyce on Providence before landing the title role on Ed.

His brother, James, is a crown attorney in Ottawa.

"Tom is so down to earth and a super nice guy," said Rush. "We got to walk around the Stuckeyville set and talk to some of the other people there. Whenever Tom had any free time, he sat with us in between filming scenes."

On the day of the shooting, the scenes were filmed in a courtroom and Mauler & Rush were seated in the background among the extras.

"The director was very nice to us. Because we were guests of Tom, he made sure we were in the shots. At one point, in a rehearsal when the judge stood up, the director said we're going to move the judge's bench because he's blocking Mauler & Rush when he stands up."

Rush said it was a "dream come true" to appear on his favourite TV show and hang out with a star such as Cavanagh. He said there are plans to organize a social event at an Ottawa bowling alley on the night and watch the episode with friends and listeners of the show.

Funny, no? :)
