Date Posted: 17:47:46 04/02/02 Tue In reply to: Brooke 's message, "Gomez have NOT sold out." on 16:55:44 04/02/02 Tue gomez have most definately not "sold-out". i think that term gets thrown around a lot by people looking for a word to describe any band that suddenly gets a lot of media attention. correct me if i'm wrong but isn't "selling-out" changing your style of music or your image for the sole purpose of taking advantage of current consumer trends? sure gomez have changed slightly, but the difference is that they're EVOLVING rather than selling out. that's the wonderful thing about musicians and one thing that sets them apart from all the bubblegum pop that's so rampant in the music industry these days - as they improve as musicians and songwriters they have a need to explore new musical styles and sounds. radiohead are the perfect example of this - they explored more electronic music with kid a and amnesiac but they did so from a musical point of view rather than a capitalist point of view. it really does get to me when people use the term "selling-out" in such a disposable fashion. becoming more successful is a natural desire for any band and i think people should acknowlegde this fact. it's not good enough to label someone a sellout just because they are becoming successful.
