The last time the doctor came to the house because I was sick he checked me out & said to grandmother take him upstairs give one or to enemas and he will be fine after the enemas . Well that was not the first enemas I was given but it did make me feel better. The enemas in the 40-50 were a fix-all .

Bill, I also grew up in the 50s and the standard remedies for whatever ailed you was orange flavored aspirin, Vicks, and an enema.

If you were sick enough for the doctor to make a house call everything seemed to focus on your bottom. First, to see how sick you were you got your temp taken rectally, then after a call to the doctor you got an enema before his arrival, and finally when he determined that you need a shot it was always in a rear cheek.

I can recall having strep throat and all the treatments were to my bottom. It didn't make sense at the time.

Barb, I had exactly the same experiences as you, also growing-up in the '50's. It seemed like my bottom was the center of attention and I would always get a rectal temp and a shot from him. Did the doctor also take your temperature rectally before giving you a shot? How old were you when you got those visits from the pediatrician?
