Bill, I also grew up in the 50s and the standard remedies for whatever ailed you was orange flavored aspirin, Vicks, and an enema.
If you were sick enough for the doctor to make a house call everything seemed to focus on your bottom. First, to see how sick you were you got your temp taken rectally, then after a call to the doctor you got an enema before his arrival, and finally when he determined that you need a shot it was always in a rear cheek.
I can recall having strep throat and all the treatments were to my bottom. It didn't make sense at the time.
