In reply to: Tim 's message, "Has Anyone Tried Resisting Getting an Enema or a Shot During a Home Visit" on Tuesday, September 21, 2010, 03:13: am

I was over at my boyfriends last night. Our parents have been friends for years. I had not been feeling very well the last several days. His dad said he would see me at his office this morning. My boyfriend drove me there. After examining me he told me I had a bad sinus infection and possible pneumonia. He came back in with 2 small syringes and told me that I would need to lie on my stomach. I unfastned my jeans and pushed them down. My wathced as I pushed down my panties. It was his first look at my bare butt. He wathced as his dad jabbed me with those big needles. Afterward my boyfriend massaged my butt and put 2 bandaids on the sites. He said I looked so hopeless laying there with my bare butt exposed. The shots hurt really bad. I wanted to resist the shots , but didn't want my boyfirned to think I was a chicken

A few questions. What State are you in? Are you in your 20s? Did you at least ask if you could get pills?

I live in New York and 99% of the time, doctors avoid giving shots. Many of my friends have had infections or worse but they always walk away with a script for antibiotics. In 15 years of seeing my doctor, he has never given a shot, nor does he suggest one. Also, most of the time, no one else is in the doctors office when we're being examined etc. Maybe it's a New York mentality?

Tim,
Today the insurance reimbursement (esp. Medicaid) is so poor doctors are reluctant to give shots. Besides, if there is some complication from the injection, they'll get sued. So it is easier to wrire a script.

Thanks for responding. My doctor takes Medicare and Medicaid. In fact, every specialist I've seen takes both. They tell me the reimbursements are fine. So maybe in NY things are okay. I can't speak for the rest of the Country.

From my experience, almost everyone I know would rather walk out with a script. I don't know anyone that would want a shot; even if it cures you faster. I think the doctors here know this.

I went to my doctor with all of my veins bright red from Staph and he wrote me a script. 2 days later it began to go away. The Staph got in from a cut I had on my arm. He never suggested a shot nor would I have taken one. If it didn't get better I suppose I would have checked into a hospital and gone on intravenous antibiotic.

A girl I know had lyme disease from a tic and they had her on intravenous in the hospital for a few days. But she never would have taken a shot.

Maybe the thinking is different in other parts of the Country.

Another girl I know in China, who is a student, says that whenever any student gets ill, they immediately start giving them penicillin shots IN SCHOOL. One a day. She says in their Country they can't afford to miss even a day of school. She got 1 shot a day for 3 days in school.
