I got my rectal temperature taken every time I had a cold. I couldn't keep the thermometer in my mouth. When I was little, I had to lay across her lap with my PJ bottoms off. When I got to big for her lap, I had to lay on a towels placed on her bed with my PJ bottoms off. What I most remember is the cool feeling sliding into my butt whem mom inserted the thermometer.
