Subject: Re: Tape Library System

Can anyone explain how the Tape Library System works.

Eric,
It is just a way to find what you've recorded more easily.
In a RAM chip and on a subtrack of the tape is located the info you've entered (title, genre, whatever) ; you can access the info wherever you are on the tape.

If you erase the tape, the info stays stored in the deck but is not related to the tape anymore.
Why? Because the deck gives a tape number to each new tape you record on and you can not erase the data AND the tape N° alltogether.
It is very likely you're going to have "jumps" in the deck's library, just like all of us!
If your deck gives a new tape the N° 68, then it is the 68th tape you've used for recording with the deck ; if you then erase it, N° 68 will remain 'done' for the deck and the next new tape used will be N°69 and not 68...
You can rename the tape's "user" name, though, from 69 to 68...

The other problem is that the info stored in the deck is not "downloadable" somewhere else ; a little RAM problem in the deck and you lose everything...
Better write everything down what you've recorded on a good ol' piece of paper !

It should have been a great feature, given the enormous amount of film one can record on a single tape, but the ergonomics of the system are clunky to say the least. Useful but one shouldn't rely on it too much.
