For S-VHS tapes: Just press the button at the recorder to switch from analog to digital recording (and vice versa).

For VHS tapes: Drill a hole into the cassette so that the recorder recognizes it as a S-VHS tape (it's very easy).

Look at an original S-VHS tape for the drilling place, or look at the picture at the following URL:
http://d-vhs.vampirehost.de/img/tapeback.jpg

If you want the recorder to recognize the tape immediatly as a D-VHS one, you have to drill 2 holes (or one additional at S-VHS tapes of course ;-)).
