Subject: copying a vcr tape to another vcr player

I have a home movie that I want to make copies of for family members. It is on a vhs tape and I want to hook up another vcr to make copies from one vcr to another. How do I do this? I was told to go from "out" on the one I am playing the tape on and "in" to the one I want to record on but it didn't work. I tried a couple other ways but, NOTHING! Please help, these tapes were going to be gifts from my son.
